Lyrics: Banks of the Gowanus

In the morning light
Brooklyn shines like a promise
The old canal
Whispers like a poem
But you can’t keep what you catch fishing
the Gowanus
And an artist in this city has no home
I came to New York as an artist
Looking to make my history
I found a space by the old canal
In an abandoned factory
The winter wind blew off the Gowanus
Froze the water in my coffee mug
But the pure winter light I was seeking
And I painted the song that was in my blood
For 5 years I painted by the old canal
Always waiting for that call
But the collectors never came here
I stacked my dusty art against the wall
Then new neighbors came to the Gowanus
Shiny people, with their shiny cars
I handed back my key and dragged my art on down the street
Past the condos and the fancy bars
Now the artists have left the Gowanus
Just like the developers have planned
If you chase your dreams in New York City
Remember that what matters is the land
